CFFTP4 Functional Fluency Lesson Workshop

For professionals working within Education, Youth work, Social work, Children’s services!

The CFFTP4 Functional Fluency Lesson Workshop, one of the five elements of the Certified Functional Fluency Teacher Programme, introduces educators to a flexible framework of 12 Functional Fluency lesson outlines designed to support pupils at key transition points throughout their secondary education. Developed to fit seamlessly into existing school structures, the programme helps schools embed relationship-building, emotional literacy, and communication skills into everyday practice without adding pressure to already crowded timetables.

This practical and collaborative workshop enables teachers, heads, behaviour leaders, youth workers, and social care professionals to explore how Functional Fluency can become part of the “everyday language” of their institution - creating greater consistency, stronger relationships, and more effective behaviour support across the whole community. The workshop combines practical application with opportunities for professional dialogue and shared learning.

What Makes This Workshop Different?

A “Spiral” Transition Strategy
Unlike one-off behaviour or well-being programmes, the 12-lesson framework is intentionally designed to be revisited at Years 7, 10, and 12. This spiral approach allows students to revisit core Functional Fluency concepts at increasingly sophisticated levels as they mature and face new developmental and social challenges.

Zero Timetable Friction
The framework is deliberately flexible and timetable-neutral. Schools can adapt the delivery to suit their context by:

  • Running one lesson per week over a term within PSHE
  • Delivering the content as a concentrated transition programme
  • Embedding the language and concepts across multiple curriculum subjects
  • Integrating Functional Fluency into wider pastoral and behaviour systems

This adaptability helps schools build a shared relational culture without needing to redesign their timetable structure.

Living Implementation Support
Rather than offering a static set of resources, the workshop includes the opportunity for ongoing collaborative drop-in sessions where participants can:

  • Share adaptations and implementation ideas
  • Discuss successes and challenges
  • Learn from colleagues working in similar contexts
  • Develop confidence in embedding Functional Fluency across their setting

The programme treats educators as active co-creators rather than passive recipients of content.

Learn Alongside the Author
This workshop offers participants the opportunity to co-create lesson approaches alongside Steve Willshaw, author of The Functionally Fluent Teacher, drawing on more than 40 years of educational experience.

Participants will gain insight into how Functional Fluency can be translated into practical classroom language and embedded within school culture in sustainable and meaningful ways.
