The Nervous System as a Guiding Torch in the Functionally Fluency Dance
Facilitated by: Delphine Oliver Date: 23 October 2026 Time: 10:00 – 11:00 UTC
We have all felt it.
The subtle lift in the chest when we feel met. The tightening across the shoulders when pressure rises. The moment the room feels spacious - or suddenly small.
Functional Fluency offers us a map of the dance - the nine modes, the movement between purple and golden behaviour.
The nervous system brings that map to life.
Together, they show us something essential:
behaviour does not exist in isolation.
It lands differently depending on state, context, and relationship.
A response that is golden in one moment can feel purple in another. The words may be the same. But the body beneath them is not.
When our nervous system settles, we perceive more. We sense context. We stay connected. The dance becomes nuanced.
When it contracts, our view narrows. We simplify. We protect. The same mode can become rigid.
Functional Fluency gives us a language. Nervous system literacy gives us sensation. Together, they open the possibility of a nourishing relational field.
The nervous system becomes the guiding torch — not replacing the map, but illuminating where we are on it, and widening what becomes possible between us.
In this webinar, we bring contemporary neurophysiology into lived experience. We will notice, in real time, how shifts in breath, muscle tone, and attention alter how we move through the modes and how our behaviour lands in the relational field.
As awareness grows, the Functional Fluency dance becomes more fluid, more contextual, more alive. Less about fixed categories. More about attuned movement.
Together We Will:
Deepen our understanding of how nervous system state shapes the meaning and impact of behaviour within the Functional Fluency map
Recognise how context and physiology determine whether behaviour lands as golden or purple
Develop embodied awareness of contraction and ease — in ourselves and in the relational field
Explore practical bottom-up and top-down ways of widening capacity and restoring flexibility in the dance
Strengthen our ability to attune, co-regulate, and respond with nuance in client work
Integrate nervous system literacy into Functional Fluency in a way that brings the model alive - not as theory, but as lived relational practice.
