It takes two to tango… but can you tango with yourself?!

The music begins...

Two dancers step onto the floor, eyes meeting for just a second.

A nod.
A breath.

And then - they move.

It’s not about one pulling and the other following like a puppet. It’s about subtle signals, gentle adjustments, and trust in each other’s balance.

The lead guides without force, the follow responds without losing their own shape. Sometimes the roles blur - a suggestion flows from one and is picked up by the other, and they weave it into the next movement... they are in flow.

This is Functional Fluency on the dance floor!

Functional Fluency is a behavioural model that helps us understand how we use our energy in relationships, leadership and everyday interactions.

Tango as a mirror for Functional Fluency

In Functional Fluency, the “dance” is how we use our energy and behaviour to connect, respond, and create the best possible outcome in the moment. Just like tango, it’s not just what you do but how you do it.

The five Golden Modes are the different moves in your repertoire:

  • Accounting’s clear awareness of the here and now
  • Structuring’s steady guidance
  • Nurturing’s warmth
  • Cooperative’s easy teamwork
  • Spontaneous’ joyful creativity

When our energy is fluent, it moves between these modes seamlessly, choosing what works best for each turn, twist, and pause.

But What About Dancing Alone?

Here’s where the metaphor gets interesting — sometimes in life, you don’t have a partner. Or, your “partner” is really just… you.

Can you still tango?

Yes, but now the dance is between different parts of yourself.
It’s your inner guide (Structuring) partnering with your playful side (Spontaneous). It's your warm, caring side (Nurturing) moving in step with your grounded awareness (Accounting), and sometimes your inner Cooperative steps in, helping those parts all work together.

When you know your own rhythm, you can self-lead and self-follow, keeping your energy in harmony with itself. That’s self-awareness in motion - and it’s just as beautiful to watch as the tango.

When energy trips over its own feet

Of course, not every dance is graceful.

Sometimes our energy slips into 'Dominating' and pushes too hard. Or it melts into 'Marshmallowing' and loses firmness altogether. 'Resistant' digs in its heels, and 'Immature' forgets the music completely. These are what we call 'the Purple Pitfalls' - the clumsy steps that drain energy instead of using it well.

Spotting when your energy has shifted into one of the 'purple pitfalls' is part of the practice. Functional Fluency is about noticing that shift, pausing, and guiding your energy back into the Golden Modes - the moves that make the dance work beautifully.

Dancing through life

Whether we are with others or on our own, life is one long improvisation.

Some days we glide in perfect synchrony; other days, our energy is all elbows and missteps, but the more we practise, paying attention, adjusting in the moment, choosing the mode that works, the more gracefully our energy flows.

When you are able to tango with yourself, leading, following, and listening within, you bring that fluency into every partnership, every conversation, and every challenge.

Because yes, it takes two to tango, but if your energy can dance beautifully with itself, you’ll be ready for anyone who joins you on the floor!
